Bluestone Finishes: Natural Cleft vs. Thermal
Bluestone comes in two main finishes, and the right one depends on how you'll use it. Natural cleft is the classic look, split along the stone's natural layers for a slightly textured, riven surface. It's slip-resistant and rustic, great for patios and pool decks. Thermal (or thermaled) is heat-treated to a smoother, more uniform surface. It reads more formal, sits flatter under furniture, and is the easier choice for accessibility. We'll walk you through both against your project and your home.
Wet-Set vs. Dry-Laid Bluestone
How the stone gets set matters as much as the stone itself. Wet-set bluestone is mortared onto a concrete slab, the most permanent, formal installation, ideal for a patio you want dead flat and locked in place. Dry-laid bluestone sits on a compacted gravel and sand base with sand or polymeric joints, which flexes with the ground, drains through the joints, and is easier to lift and reset later. Neither is "better," they fit different projects, and picking wrong is how a beautiful patio ends up cracked or heaved. We recommend the method after we see the site and how you'll use it.
Why Bluestone Holds Up in Philadelphia
Bluestone is a dense, hard sandstone, which is exactly why it lasts here. It resists the freeze-thaw that chews up softer stone and concrete, it doesn't need sealing to survive, and it wears in rather than wearing out, developing character over the years instead of looking tired. It's low maintenance, holds its color, and because it's quarried regionally, it's the natural stone that belongs on a Philadelphia-area home. Set on the right base, a bluestone patio or walk outlasts almost anything else you could put down.

Bluestone FAQs
-
What is bluestone?
Bluestone is a dense sandstone quarried in Pennsylvania and New York, named for its blue-gray color, though it also comes in "full color" with tans, browns, and lilacs. It's a premium natural stone used for patios, walkways, steps, and coping, prized for how well it holds up outdoors.
-
How much does bluestone cost in Philadelphia?
Bluestone is a premium natural stone, so it costs more than poured concrete or pavers, and the price depends on the finish, the pattern, the square footage, and whether it's wet-set or dry-laid. We look at the project and give you a written estimate that matches the actual scope.
-
Natural cleft or thermal, which finish should I choose?
Natural cleft has a textured, slip-resistant surface that suits patios and pool decks; thermal is smoother, flatter, and more formal, and it's better under furniture and for accessibility. We help you match the finish to how you'll use the space.
-
Should bluestone be wet-set or dry-laid?
It depends. Wet-set on a concrete slab is the most permanent and formal; dry-laid on a gravel and sand base flexes with the ground, drains through the joints, and is easier to repair. We recommend the method after we see the site.
-
Does bluestone hold up to Philadelphia winters?
Yes, and that's one of its biggest advantages. Bluestone is dense and hard, so it resists the freeze-thaw cycles that crack softer stone and concrete, and it does it without needing to be sealed.
-
Does bluestone need to be sealed?
It doesn't have to be. Bluestone is durable on its own, but a breathable sealer can add stain resistance and deepen the color if you want it. We'll tell you honestly whether your project benefits from it.
