Our Philadelphia Brick Pointing Services
Most brick problems start in the mortar. Here's how we handle the most common ones.
Mortar Joint Repointing
We grind out cracked, recessed, or powdery mortar joints and repack them with a mix matched to your original construction. This covers exterior walls, interior walls, chimneys, and arches. It is the everyday repair that keeps small problems small.
Full Facade Brick Pointing
For homes over 50 years old, we repoint the whole elevation so you get one even finish instead of patchwork. Common on rowhomes in South Philly, Fairmount, and Fishtown, where a partial job stands out.
Chimney Brick & Stone Repointing
We stabilize leaning stacks, seal open joints, and reset loose brick or stone before water gets behind it. If the chimney needs more than pointing, see our chimney repointing and repair.

Stone Pointing and Historic Facades
Philadelphia has as much stone as brick: schist rowhomes, stone foundations, brownstone fronts. Stone pointing works like brick pointing, but the joints are wider and the mortar has to move with an old stone wall, not fight it. We rake out the failed mortar, match the color and texture of the original, and repack the joints by hand so the wall sheds water and keeps its character. Fieldstone, schist, and pointed rubble walls all hold up for decades when the mortar is right. Get the mix wrong and you trap water and crack the stone.
Signs Your Home Needs Repointing
Mortar fails slowly, then all at once. Catch it early and you repoint. Wait too long and you rebuild. Watch for:
-
Hairline cracks running along the joints
-
Mortar that looks recessed, soft, or turns to powder when you scratch it
-
Damp or musty interior walls, or bubbling paint
-
A chimney that leans or sheds debris
-
White chalky residue on the brick (efflorescence)
Philadelphia's freeze-thaw winters and tight rowhome walls speed all of this up, so what looks cosmetic in October can be a leak by spring.
How Our Brick Pointing Process Works
-
Inspection & Assessment
We look over the brick walls, chimneys, and interior and exterior surfaces for joint decay and any sign the wall is moving, not just cracking.
-
Mortar Analysis & Scope
We match your original mortar for color, texture, and composition (older Philadelphia homes usually need a softer lime mortar, not modern Portland mix). Then we mark exactly what gets full removal versus a partial repoint, and put it in writing.
-
Joint Removal & Prep
We hand-remove the old mortar, then clean and square each joint so the new mortar bonds tight. We work with hand tools, not a rushed grinder that scars the brick face.
-
Repointing & Final Review
We pack and tool fresh mortar to match the original joint profile, then walk the whole job to check adhesion and finish before we call it done.
Lime Mortar vs. Portland: Why It Matters on Old Homes
Here's the mistake that ruins a lot of Philadelphia repointing jobs: hard modern Portland mortar on a soft old wall. Homes built before the 1930s were laid with soft lime mortar on purpose. The mortar is meant to be softer than the brick, so it takes the stress and wears away instead of the brick face. Repoint an old wall with hard Portland and the brick becomes the weak point. It spalls, cracks, and pops its face off within a few winters. We match the mortar to the age of your home, soft lime for historic walls, modern mixes where they belong, so the repair protects the brick instead of destroying it.

Brick Pointing FAQs
-
How much does brick pointing cost in Philadelphia?
It depends on three things: how much wall needs work, how high it is (ground-floor joints versus a third-story chimney change the labor), and whether we're spot-repointing or doing a full facade. We give you a written estimate after the inspection so the number reflects your actual wall, not a guess.
-
What's the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
Repointing replaces worn mortar to restore strength and seal the joint. Tuckpointing is a finishing technique that uses two mortar colors to make joints look crisp and uniform. Most Philadelphia homes need repointing for protection; tuckpointing is about appearance on top of that.
-
Do I need brick pointing if there are no visible cracks?
Often, yes. Walls can look intact while the joints fail behind the brick face. Recessed joints and small brick movement go unnoticed until water shows up inside. Pointing early keeps the wall strong and weather-tight.
-
How does failed mortar affect my interior walls?
Bubbling paint, damp spots, and musty smells usually start with bad exterior joints. Water travels through soft mortar and settles behind your drywall. Repointing creates a sealed, breathable barrier that protects the inside and saves you a drywall repair.
-
Does repointing improve curb appeal?
Yes. Worn mortar makes a wall look tired. Sharp, clean joints restore the contrast between the brick and the lines, and signal that the house is sound.
-
Is brick pointing covered by homeowners insurance?
Usually not. Pointing is considered maintenance. But keeping up with it prevents the kind of failures (wall collapse, water damage) that do turn into claims.
