The Team Behind APS Masonry Contracting
Meet Alec Serowatka, Founder
Alec founded APS Masonry Contracting in 2017 with a specific goal: build a masonry and general contracting company that homeowners actually want to hire again. He walks every site personally, writes every line-item proposal, and stays reachable from estimate to completion. When he's not on a jobsite, Alec writes about masonry, restoration, and Philly housing stock for the APS blog.
Why APS Masonry Was Founded in Huntingdon Valley
Alec started APS because the options for homeowners in the Delaware Valley were split between two extremes: big general contractors who subbed out masonry to the cheapest bidder, and one-person operators who couldn't handle the structural side of historic rowhome work.
Neither worked. Subbed-out masonry meant mismatched mortar, cut corners, and finished walls that failed within a year. One-person operators couldn't finish a basement remodel or coordinate a full facade restoration. APS was built to cover both. Masonry and general contracting, in-house, on the same job, with the same team.
Credentials & Licensing
Fully Insured and Licensed PA General Contractors (#PA139378)
APS Masonry Contracting operates under general liability and workers compensation coverage on every job. Certificates of insurance are available on request before work begins as well. We also do business under Pennsylvania Contractor License #139378. The license is current, verifiable through the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection, and covers both masonry and general contracting work.
4.9-Star Average on Google, HomeAdvisor, ProvenExpert, TrustedPros & BuildZoom
We have verified customer reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5 stars on HomeAdvisor, covering projects from single-chimney repairs to multi-month basement remodels. We also have additional third-party verified reviews on ProvenExpert, TrustedPros, and BuildZoom. We encourage homeowners to check multiple platforms rather than relying on on-site testimonials alone.
Our Approach to Masonry & General Contracting
Delaware Valley Homes Demand Real Expertise
Historic homes in the area are unforgiving. 100-year-old brick facades, shared party walls, 36-inch alleys, marble stoops, and housing that was built before modern codes. Joint spacing, mortar chemistry, and tie-in details all matter. The wrong mix shows up within a year. The right one lasts 50. APS crews stay sharp because the community holds the work to that standard.
How We Run Every Project, From Estimate to Finish
Every project starts with a walk-through and a written proposal, not a pitch. We meet on-site when possible, walk the scope, identify the root cause (not just the visible damage), and send a line-item proposal as soon as possible. During the job, you get a named foreman, and daily sidewalk sweeps. When the job finishes, the site is clean and the work is documented. Additionally, we don't sub out a job unless we trust the hands doing it. We don't finish work we can't stand behind. We don't dodge calls after the invoice clears. If something isn't right, we fix it. If we scoped it wrong, we say so. The result carries our name on it, which is the only accountability that matters.

-
How can I tell if my brick or stone masonry needs repair?
Look for crumbling mortar between bricks or stones, cracks running through the masonry, white mineral deposits on the surface (efflorescence), and bricks that have shifted or loosened. On Germantown rowhomes, also watch for horizontal cracks along party walls, water staining in the basement, and mortar joints you can scrape out with a key. Catching these signs early avoids costlier structural repairs. Interior dampness often traces back to failing exterior mortar or foundation joints.

Scope ranges from single-chimney repairs and brick pointing to multi-month basement remodels and historic facade restorations on 100-year-old rowhomes and brownstones.
-
What makes APS Masonry different from other Philadelphia masonry contractors?
Three things. One: we keep every trade in-house, so masonry and general contracting run on the same job with the same team instead of being subbed out to the cheapest bidder. Two: every project has a named on-site foreman present daily, not a rotating crew lead. Three: every proposal is line-item transparent, so homeowners see exactly what drives the cost before signing. That combination is rare in the Delaware Valley masonry market.
